Do they turn up?
Reliability is the whole job. Ask for recent references from contractors, not just homeowners, and ask specifically about attendance against programme.
What plant comes with them?
A gang without its own transport and rollers is a gang waiting on somebody else. Our two three man tarmac teams each come with a 7.5 tonne and a 10 tonne lorry, so they arrive able to work.
Insurance and paperwork
Check the insurance is current and that they can produce it without a fuss. We are fully insured and happy to send documentation before anything is agreed.
Do they understand the specification?
Ask how they would build the job, not just what they would charge. A gang that talks about depths, compaction and falls understands the work. One that only talks about price is quoting for something else.
