Most people start with the look and work backwards to the budget. It is usually more useful the other way around, because the three main driveway surfaces behave quite differently once they are down.
Tarmac
The most practical option for most homes. It is quick to lay, it takes vehicle traffic well, and it costs less per square metre than the alternatives. It is a plain finish, so if kerb appeal is the priority it may not be the one, but for a large area or a shared drive it is hard to beat on value.
Resin bound gravel
A smooth, modern surface in a wide choice of colours. Its real advantage in London is that it is permeable, so rainwater drains through it rather than running into the road. It needs a solid tarmac or concrete base underneath, so it is a surface layer rather than a whole construction.
Block paving
The strongest first impression, and the easiest to repair. If a section sinks or a service trench is needed, the blocks lift and go back down. It costs more in labour because every edge has to be cut and restrained properly.
What actually decides the lifespan
None of the above. It is the base underneath. A cheap drive laid on a shallow sub base will crack, sink and spread whatever the surface on top of it is. When you compare quotes, compare the excavation depth and the sub base specification, not just the finish.
